I know that many readers consider it as a warning to women in the face of rising chauvinism and puritanism in our society, but something doesn t feel right. For one thing, there s no real explanation of how and why things deteriorated so fast so definitely There s no explanation about the life and conditions of the lowest ranks of that society Do the women who are at the bottom of the social ladder continue to have babies Or does society as a whole rely only on the handmaids And further, how can the author even think that healthy young males would meekly accept the no sex ban for a considerable length of time Even in the Muslim society, which closely resembles the fantasy world Mrs Atwood created, men manage to have outlets to their sexual drive even if rules and prohibitions are strict.Seems to me like the author doesn t know men at all As for the women portrayed here, they re meek, petty, jealous, envious and in constant competition with each other This isn t who I or my women friends are, which leads me to believe that this author s misunderstanding includes women as well as men.So I really didn t like ithis book, and if the author s message was to warn women that they might end up as mere reproductive objects, it could have been given with less paranoia and less sexism than what I found here. The story per s is not a bad one it actually has a huge and chilling subject behind it all It s an Orwell kind of dystopian novel, except that I didn t like the writing as much nor it was as gripping as Orwell s 1984.I liked the subject very much, but I found the writing to be a little confusing the author never uses inverted commas for direct speeches, so you kind of have to interpret for yourself what is going on and who s speaking Not a bad reading, for real it just wasn t my cup of tea Romanzo che merita tantissimo, mi piaciuto parecchio anche se in alcuni punti pensavo ma non succede niente In realt non che debba accadere qualcosa per forza perch si parla di sottomissione della donna, come venga privata dei suoi diritti fino a renderla un mero utero con le gambe un romanzo distopico che lascia il segno, nonostante fosse stato pubblicato quasi vent anni fa i temi trattati sono molto attuali e contemporanei. THE SUNDAY TIMES NOBESTSELLER Discover the dystopian novel that started a phenomenon before you read the Booker Prize winning sequel The TestamentsNOW AN AWARD WINNING TV SERIES STARRING ELISABETH MOSSOffred is a Handmaid in The Republic of Gilead, a religious totalitarian state in what was formerly known as the United States She is placed in the household of The Commander, Fred Waterford her assigned name, Offred, means of Fred She has only one function to breed If Offred refuses to enter into sexual servitude to repopulate a devastated world, she will be hanged Yet even a repressive state cannot eradicate hope and desire As she recalls her pre revolution life in flashbacks, Offred must navigate through the terrifying landscape of torture and persecution in the present day, and between two men upon which her future hangsMasterfully conceived and executed, this haunting vision of the future places Margaret Atwood at the forefront of dystopian fiction A fantastic, chilling story And so powerfully feminist Bernadine Evaristo, author of GIRL, WOMAN, OTHER This novel seems ever vital in the present dayObserverIncludes exclusive content In The Backstory you can read Margaret Atwood s account of how she came to write this landmark dystopian novel Indubbiamente un capolavoro, una descrizione di un mondo distopico solo apparentemente distante dal nostro, ma in realt racconta fra le righe molto pi di quello che una prima lettura potrebbe suscitare Agli amanti del genere distopico sicuramente sar apprezzato, il lavoro della Atwood veramente notevole nel raccontare segregazioni e speranze, lasciando sempre la voglia di girare pagina. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, a dystopy for adults, a sort of Anne Frank s diary written by Orwell. The future presented by Atwood is grim, yet in some way it s almost plausible and looking at some recent political developments across the globe, it looks almost like Atwood wrote her story with a computer and a crystal ball. The Handmaid s Tale is there to remind us of the importance of freedom, of free will, of the absurdity of any totalitarianism. What an incredible book Somewhat unbelievable in some ways, but very much believable as it could happen, in the worst scenario ever look at what s happening today It could be reality, it could be women s worst nightmare I haven t seen the TV programme, only read the original book, so no idea how the writer s have progressed this story for TV It left a mark on me, it opens your mind as to how women have been treated over time and how we are considered a lesser person vs men Disturbing book, but very thought provoking Very.
